You can be SO sweet!

Sweetest Day Gift Ideas

In the early 1920s, Cleveland candy store employee, Herbert Birch Kingston, resolved to spread kindness by distributing candy to orphans, nursing homes and others less fortunate. His charitable nature caught on, and now every third Saturday in October we follow his lead by doing good deeds on Sweetest Day.

This year, as our country continues on its path to recovery, we could all use a little sweetness. Many people will exchange gifts of cards, flowers or chocolates, reminiscent of Mr. Kingston’s candy. We offer some charitable ideas for celebrating Sweetest Day:

Help educationally disadvantaged children

This year, our firm’s Community Beacon recipient is an organization that seeks to break down educational barriers and level the playing field for disadvantaged children. Shoes and Clothes for Kids (SC4K) helps empower thousands of children each year by providing them with school uniforms, shoes, socks and other necessary school supplies they otherwise could not afford. If you’re interested in helping support this effort, SC4K offers opportunities for giving and volunteering.

Promote breast cancer awareness

October is breast cancer awareness month, a time dedicated to promoting self-care. Breast cancer is the second most common type of cancer among women (after skin cancer). Although women over 50 years old comprise the majority of cases, younger women and men are also affected.* Preventative measures and early detection offer the best chance of survival for all: so, it’s important to keep up with your screenings.

Unfortunately, the COVID-19 outbreak has hindered the fundraising efforts for breast cancer research organizations and other nonprofits. If you’re interested in giving to a nonprofit on Sweetest Day, you can find a reputable organization to support on charitynavigator.org.

Support local businesses

Many small businesses have been negatively impacted by the health crisis, and you can help them recover by shopping locally. If you’re not ready to shop in person, a number of stores have introduced online shopping or curbside pick-up and would benefit from a gift card purchase for later use or a good word about them on social media. Some local restaurants offer heated patio dining for those comfortable enjoying a meal on-site, otherwise take out is an option. And you can help keep your gym’s doors open by maintaining your membership and leveraging virtual workouts.

If Sweetest Day inspires you to give, your Luma Wealth advisor can help you create a philanthropic strategy that fits into your plan.
