Sometimes You Need to Stop and Smell the Roses
Life is full of distractions. From emails and texts flashing across your cell phone to sudden thoughts about the things you need to do, many of us spend far too much time dwelling about the past or anxiously anticipating the future. Practicing mindfulness can make you healthier and happier.
What is mindfulness?
Mindfulness is an awareness of your surroundings and the state of being present. You’re mindful when you’re fully engaged in a conversation, noticing the flowers in bloom when out walking the dog, or reading your daughter a bedtime story without glancing at the time. Mindfulness doesn’t come naturally to most people; it requires practice.
How to practice mindfulness
When you find yourself pre-occupied by life and a little bit stressed, the following technique, practiced for about 20 minutes, can help you become more engaged and connected.*
• Sit in a straight-backed chair or with your legs crossed on the floor
• Quietly meditate by focusing on your breathing
• Begin to notice things such as sights, sounds and emotions without judgment
• If your mind starts to wander, return to a focus on your breathing
Does preparing a wealth plan make you mindful?
Wealth planning is about setting yourself up financially to achieve your goals. This includes anticipating the unexpected, so you’re prepared and protected. Wealth planning is part of mindfulness because it helps to alleviate anxieties about what’s to come, takes the stress out of thinking about your future, and gives you the freedom to stop and smell the roses.
A wealth plan can help relieve anxiety about the future so you can focus on being healthy, happy and present in the moment.
