Why We are Thankful for Mary Virginia Merrick
Mary Virginia Merrick, born on November 2, 1866, was a pioneer and a visionary who established the Christ Child Society in 1887 to help children and their families. Paralyzed from a fall as a teenager, she spent her life in a wheelchair yet continued to serve others despite her physical handicap. We are thankful for her leadership and dedication which provided the inspiration for Merrick House, our 2019 Community Beacon recipient; and we share her commitment to community.
Merrick House was founded 100 years ago as a community resource, initially serving Cleveland’s East Central European immigrants who went there for English classes and childcare. Merrick House continues to empower Cleveland area children and families today, providing recreational services and other vital support for our community, such as their MomsFirst program for expectant mothers in need.
As Thanksgiving approaches, we remain encouraged by Mary Virginia Merrick’s gift of hope and opportunity. And we are thankful for Merrick House and its volunteers, who work tirelessly to improve lives in our community and to make the world a better place.
Gift an expectant mother in need! If you’d like an opportunity to give back this holiday season, consider supporting our MomsFirst donation drive. We’ll be collecting these new infant items at our office until December 19th.
Wishing you and your family a Thanksgiving filled with joy.
